Q: Do I need to be in shape to start Karate?
A: Not at all! through your training you will see a significant improvement in your fitness, flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, and much more
Q: What should I wear to my first class?
A: Loose fitting or workout clothing should be worn to class. The practice of Karate involves lots of different movements and you need to be able to freely move the various parts of your body to correctly perform the techniques we teach.
Q: I studied another martial art previously, does my rank directly transfer over? A: The transfer of rank is taken on a case by case basis. ALL new students will complete a full testing cycle as a White Belt. During this time Sensei will judge your current knowledge and ability level, how quickly you adapt to the Yoshukai style, and pick up on the curriculum. Additionally, some martial arts are not comparable and rank cannot be transferred. Example a Black Belt in Judo or Jujitsu does not equate to a Black Belt in Karate as those styles of martial arts are significantly different in technique and training philosphy.
Q: How long will it take for me to reach Black Belt?
A: While earning the Black Belt is a great personal achievement, it should not be a means to an end. Your progress through the ranks depends on a number of varibles including: how much time you practice outside of class, how quickly you learn and can correctly demonstrate the various techniques and Kata, how often you attend class and training functions. On average it can take between 4-5 years.
Q: What are the costs involved in learning Karate?
A: As with any activity there are various costs. In Karate, the most common costs include: monthly class tuition, purchase of a uniform, purchase of sparring safety gear and weapons, tournament and seminar fees, and rank testing fees. Golden Isles Yoshukai boasts one of the lowest tuitions in Brunswick and we have no contracts. If you change your mind and no longer want to take classes you are NOT financially obligated to continue to pay.
Q: What ages do you accept students?
A: We accept students ages 7 and up! Adults and kids alike can benefit from Karate training! PARENTS! Karate is NOT a spectator sport. In what other activity can you actively participate alongside your child? Instead of sitting in the waiting room, put on a gi of your own and train alongside your child! Learn the forms, compete in tournaments, and enjoy Karate TOGETHER!
